'We will not introduce "top-up" fees
and have legislated to prevent them.'
That is a direct quote from the manifesto of the Labour Party for the 2001 General Election. (Full text.)
In the Queen's Speech this week announcing their program of legislation for the next parliamentary year, they included a measure to bring in... top-up fees. But don't worry - it won't come into effect unless they're re-elected! That will be their excuse, but that is also our opportunity.
This is another ill-thought-out initiative by the 10 Downing Street team that proposed instant fines collected by frogmarching miscreants to a cashpoint. That idea was quietly binned. This time it's future generations of students they want to frogmarch to a cashpoint.

It suddenly came to me today what Blair is doing, and his failure to do it is just another marker of his ineptitude.
He is constantly attempting to commit suicide and he is constantly being found slumped over a policy and the policy is pumped out of him and he recovers to stagger on to the next disaster that will have to watered down when it is found in him, to dilute the poison of it. He will succeed in the end just like his mentor Thatcher.
Some of the imbibed poisons can't be quite cleared from his system and are quietly poisoning him in the background and it may the one of those, such as the illegal attack on the Iraqi people, that will eventually see him off.

I think the purpose of the variable top-up fee proposal is to enable the ruling class in due course to buy places in the best universities for their doltish children, so that those children can carry on the rule of the congenitally stupid and avaricious over the honest, intelligent and hard-working.

I say this to you. Over and over and over and over and over again. If you want to study sociology at the University of Chelmsford and delay going on to the dole for a further three years we will support you in that choice as long as you get yourself into unbelievable debt by the age of 21. Look, this is a debt culture and it is best to get you early. Once you are indebted your freedom of action is taken from you absolutely. No power to strike. No nothing. I can't emphasise enough that this is the future of Britain. Living on the Never Never. Or at least till it comes crashing down around our ears. Which it will.
And stop saying we need plumbers and brickies. I'm sick of hearing it. You are missing the point. That will not get you inti debt. Very soon I will be announcing our new initiative to maker credit cards available to 14 year olds. No exceptions. Choice is a must. I say this to you.
Hail!

I need to become a millionaire before my 15 year old son reaches 18 and wants to go to University. I will not have him saddled with debts that take until he's claiming his pension to pay back.
Did you see Mo Mowlam on the Frank Skinner Show? She followed that porn star Ron Jeffries, I think his name is. She was scathing about our Tone.
