From charnel pyres of oxen to cowed chattels

Yes, Nick Brown, the timeserver who implemented the government's stupid Foot and Mouth eradication policy that turned the country into a toxic-smoke-blown killing field, and gave a new sense to the term Rack of Lamb has now decided that he cannot see his way to voting against his career. Now will the rest of the rebels turn and follow their lead sheep into the crypto-Tory pen?

To my MP today via email @parliament.uk.

I hope that you will not be swayed by the govt whips into voting for Blair's proposals on student fees. To ditch principles simply to protect Blair would, I feel, be the worst thing that could happen. To have such a large parliamentary majority and yet to be in such a mess over this should tell Blair something but it seems he is incapable of being told anything. If the govt loses the vote the govt will still survive even if Blair doesn't. So be it. Blair's increasing use of sophistry on the issue of manifesto promises, fees, Iraq, et al is deeply insulting and alienating to all who wish to be engaged in the political process in this country. I for one will not vote Labour next time if he is still leader. This is a shame, not least because I am pleased at your own willingness, at least in this second term, to resist the whips when policy is antithetical to core Labour principles. To have a triumvirate of dishonest unprincipled sophists in Blair, Straw and Blunkett leading the government is extremely and increasingly dispiriting.

I see that we are now keen on selling Libya weapons of mass destruction and are eager to sell them a brand spanking new missile system.

I expect we are also ensconced with Chalabi and others in Iraq setting up deals to sell the new improved Iraq weapons of mass destruction. The more things change etc etc.

Oh I do enjoy watching parliament on television. I like looking at all the MPs ties and putting them into a top three each day.

Do you know what Mrs Berries, you're spot on there. I made a point of watching telly today to see what you meant about the ties, and what a revelation. I think the gents behind Mr Howard were all colour co-ordinated, all tones of mauve. It was as good as Wildlife on One for colour. You don't see enough of mauve these days. I asked for mauve in a shop recently and they gave me cerise. Well, what can you do? Nothing. Cerise, my foot.

Oh but Mrs Haverty, wasnt that just such a lovely big red chair Mr Hutton was perching on. If I had a chair like that I'd be like a king of the kingdom of kings on the planet King.
