O'Farrells

O'Farrells really are an excellent butchers. I can heartily recommend their meat. The sausages are particularly wonderful, the steak is succulent and they have a wide range of chops. It is a mystery to me why anybody in Willesden would buy their meat anywhere else like say Somerfield.

Support your local shops.

How they can claim to be traditional with a horrible front door like that I don't know. It is a horrible door albeit very popular with all sorts of establishments. The shop frontage is similarly distressing though the nameboard is not too bad, a pleasant enough mix of scripts but spoilt by the overlarge and unattractively presented telephone number.

In a one-to-ten scale rating of "would this shopfront be in your perfect world" with 10 being "oh yes please" this one scores 0.5.

Summary: Horrible.

Flog them

Whoever first designed that door and everyone who has ever thought it a good idea to buy and instal one anywhere in public view should be flogged until they bloody well bleed.

This door has been subtly infiltrated into public consciousness to the extent that anyone looking at it will register, on a barely conscious level, that they know the feel of it, the weight of it, what it feels like to shoulder it open, the initial creak of it when it is opened the first few inches and then the sound of it as the springarm clicks. It truly is a monstrosity which will garner some tiny charm only when there are only 3 or 4 left in the land.

It's design, construction, materials and look are dampers to the potential flowering of individuals. It is a bloody disgrace.

I never reealised I hated those doors so much until I saw it written down like that. You are right. They are symptomatic of the ennui of modern society. To live in a society in which this particular door is ubiquitous without that fact registering till now (I am 53) is testament to how our aesthetic awareness is dulled in our dull urban environment.

Bravo!

Ghastly

They remind me of life behind the Iron Curtain, black and white films of rainy autumn afternoons in Bucharest, housing estates of prestressed concrete. The thing about the noise of them is true. I've never heard it mentioned. For once Plato is wrong. It is good to talk.

Sawdust and Blood

Butchers shops stink. The stench of them is unacceptable, in fact they are positively medieval. They are a remnant of the Dark Ages. Fishmongers are a close second. How is it permissible to have these stenches emanating from these shops. It is anti-social. If like me the stench makes you vomit do as I do and go in these shops and vomit in them.

The door is vile.

Forgive my directness but it is absolutely vile and distressing.

The door has been rightly mentioned. Remaining stocks should be dumped at sea. The aluminium window units are heartbreakingly ugly and the tiling undreneath the window and up the side of the door is disgracefully unimaginative and dull. If you want to do this kind of thing in your own home then do so. However to have this impacting on people's well-being by being in public view is verging on criminal behaviour. It is imprisonment of the spirit and a denial of all that is beautiful. It is an afront.

I've never heard such a load of tommy rot. The next thing you'll all be telling us is that the graffiti there is beautiful. I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't one of you lot who wasn't the one who didn't refrain from leaving those walls not in their previously unsullied state.

Not who didn't refrain, I mean who didn't refrain from not leaving them in their not previously sullied state. Also I wouldn't not be surprised if it wasn't one of you, I mean I would be not surprised if it was one of you, who wasn't responsible. Not!

Dear sweet Jesus!! They butcher families and advertise the fact?? Being from a small hamlet in Surrey I know that it is traditional to butcher families in the quiet of the innocent looking countryside but heavens preserve us! this is the metropolis, the cosmopolis, a recent invention, how can it yet be traditional here? And so shameless. This isn't Royston Vasey for heaven's sake, this is good old Willesden!!

Through what nightmare am I walking?

When shall I awake?

And that awning!!! It is despicably unimaginative. How dull and unambitiuous capitalism is is revealed in its entirety by that awning. Awnings should be beautiful. On this one I would recommend a green field in which cows and sheep are grazing under a blue sky flecked with the wispiest of clouds.

Whoever thought this awning worthy of public display should also be bloody well flogged till he bleeds.

Disgusting!

Why does it only mention the traditional family? What about one-parent families? What about gay couples? We have to learn to be an all-inclusive society. Equal butchery for all.

Do you mean to tell me that if I walk in there, for argument sake, in a tutu with tuille fairy wings on my back (and bear in mind I'm a 16 stone, 5 ft. 6 inch middle-aged man) on the arm of a leather clad Village People clone, that they are going to refuse to serve me! Where will it end?

Dear Willesden Herald

Under the stewardship of its present guiding lights the Herald has become essential reading matter in our house. All of human life is there and, what is more, it has saved me money since I have been able to cancel my subscriptions to Architectural Review, The Job, Langue apres Derrida, The Pre-Post Modernist Quarterly, uPVC and Glass Door Trade, and The TV Times on account of the Herald's coverage being superior in all those things.

The reassuring thud of the Herald being pushed through my box each morning guarantees that I will start the day satiated with learning and stimulation. Many thanks.

T.D
