Mam's fish bar

"Her warm and genuine smile beamed out from beneath a shock of red wiry hair, swept back and piled high on top of her head."

Franchised restaurants are boring monocultural morgues.

Sad about Mam's, isn't it.

I followed the link to dg's blog an hour ago and just gave it up now as my eyes have become square-ish.

I'm annoyed that I won't be able to attend any of the sites included in the 'Open London' event this coming weekend, or to see the unveiling of sculpture on Trafalgar Square's fourth plinth tomorrow, or the recreation of Nelson's funeral procession on the Thames on Friday. Still, I enjoyed reading about what's happening in London. Thanks for the link.

The local youth round my way seem to have forgotten about Mam already, merrily queueing for spicy grilled nibbles and biryanis where previously they'd have been happy with a bag of chips.

Still, at least the place hasn't turned into a Starbucks.

Strange that you should mention Starbucks...this morning (on a news programme - North America) it was announced that Bob Dylan has signed a deal with Starbucks. This over-rated, over-priced coffee chain will sell his music from now on. The thinking is that the consumer demographic (older folks) is a good fit. In retaliation, HMV has pulled all of Dylan's music from their shelves. I'll restrain the impulse to editorialise.
