Herald photographer survives fall

Ossian was humming "On a Clear Day" and trying to take a picture from the roof garden of Willesden Herald House, when he lost his balance and fell over the parapet. Luckily he landed in a large holly bush and got away with just a few scratches and bruises. He discovered this picture in his camera when he landed. He says you can see Gladstone Park in it.

Gladstone Park

I can't help but feel that your photograph doesn't really to Gladstone Park justice.

As recompense the Willy might consider producing a Gladstone Park supplement to draw attention to the park's many features. For instance:

- the swings and the tennis courts,
- the Holocaust Memorial,
- the wonderful avenues of trees,
- the Gandhi Tree Circle,
- the Brentosaurus (has to be seen to be believed),
- the walled garden and its crazy paving, and
- the bronze bather in the pond

Not to mention the burnt out shell of Gladstone House itself.

Did you know you can see the top of the BT Tower from the benches on the hill. When Nicole left me I spent many hours sitting up there contemplating the view. And if you look closely you can see where the Willesden Lido used to be.

You forgot to mention the Nature Reserve, a small piece of jungle with a path through it. There is plenty to interest birdwatchers there as well as around the pond with its bosky island.

You're right. It is amazing.

BTW did you know that that great old buffer John Betjeman featured the birdwatcher of Gladstone Park in his 1872 TV documentary Metroland? It was one of Nicole's favourites.

Yes, Willesden is Metroland - opened up by the Metropolitan Line, which follows the southern boundary of Gladstone Park. I followed the long secluded path beside the track one day with my dog, and it led to the gates of a field of allotments. There I disturbed a lost tribe of cloth cap wearers who froze in their hoeing and trowelling to gaze at this explorer with a mixture of disbelief and trepidation. I believe they have not seen anyone from the outside world since shortly after Metroland was opened up in the 1930's.
