Fish live in pond

Here at the Willy we like to empasize the positive, as opposed to our competitors such as the mighty Brent Leader, whose recent front page headline was "Fish die in pond."

Somewhere I have a photo of leaves floating on a pond. Does that count?

People are always complaining that there's nothing but bad news. But Fish Die in Pond is news and Fish Live in Pond isn't. So people are stupid. They don't deserve newspapers.

While visiting the Perkins in Cornwall last spring I thought I'd help to sort out the back garden. I tipped a large water-filled pot out and to my surprise, Hercules the goldfish (a somewhat distorted creature) flew out with the flood. Poor Hercules, flopping there in the dirt. I managed to scoop him back into the pot's murky green water that now only reached the halfway mark. Later we all laughed about Hercules' green pastures and I was thankful that he survived. In weekend news, I've just learned that the Perkins have made a new garden pond and with due ceremony installed Hercules in the midst of it. Alas, after three days, they found him belly up on the surface. Seems the new digs were a bit too rich for his blood. There's nothing like photos of fish in ponds to kindle newsworthy stories. Thus, a Herculean obituary. R.I.P.

a lovely vignette. sorry, i can't stop fawning - i do like your writing. i took the above picture at a hula party in a very grand place. (yes, i do get out occasionally.) i notice you mention that Hercules was "distorted". that reminds me that one or two of the bigger carp (not seen in this picture) appeared to be sort of "bent out of shape" as they cruised slowly around near the bottom. the gardener who looked after the pond told me there were about 200 fish ranging in price from £50 to £500 each. (i don't know if that's true or not.) i asked him a few questions and apparently you stop feeding them in advance of the winter because they stop eating. if the pond freezes over, you mustn't break the ice or they'll die. (again, i don't know how true these things are.)

I had a pond once in a garden I owned... once.... a long time ago... anyway for this pond I installed ten goldfish all of which I named Maud, the idea being that when I had visitors I could show them the pond and say 'oh and there's Maud', and I would never get the name wrong because they were all called Maud. Well, one by one Maud died. I filled the pond in. It became a Maudoleum.

I'm intrigued to know what a hula party is. Another name for Hawaiian luau? Or is it about twirling plastic hoops around your waist?
Also speculating about the 500 Pound price of a carp. Can fish have pedigrees? Do they figure on the antiques market?
Are they edible? Perhaps, if they're all like Maudddddd, longevity does make them valuable.

it's true - they can cost thousands of pounds. the older the more valuable, and they can live 100 years, i think. some of them anyway. i believe a 100 year old one would cost something like £30,000. if i'm wrong, don't tell me - it's like santa and the tooth fairy to me.

Cornish fish murderers!!!

I resent that remark. Long ago, Cornishmen elevated the humble fish to show their appreciation of the ultimate sacrifice by creating Star Gazey Pie. In this magnificent memorial to finhood, the silver bodies are arranged like the spokes of a wheel. Lying on their left sides, eye heavenward, in a cradle of short pastry and bathed in cream, they meet the oven. When the dish is brought to the table, all marvel at the beauty of it and are understandably loathe to apportion it. Transformation and murder are two different things but perhaps you need to be west of Somerset to understand.

Indeed so.

Our good Lord would have enjoyed a little of that on a Friday.
